Further updates at the end.
A
California Republican Congressional candidate running against
Democrat incumbent Judy Chu has been ordered to attend 26 anger
management classes after she was arrested on Thanksgiving Day
after a physical altercation with one of her children.
Republican
Beatrice Cardenas spent six days in jail, unable to afford bail after
being taken into custody at her Alhambra home in California’s 27th
Congressional District. She was arrested just as the family was
sitting down to Thanksgiving Dinner and charged with misdemeanor
child abuse.
Because
of minor victims in the case, court records describing the incident
have not been made available, but Cardenas is alleged to have bitten
one of her children and caused other bodily injuries to a child after
an escalating physical confrontation that left one of her sons with
broken bones in his hand.
At
a December 3rd arraignment, Cardenas was ordered by a California
judge to attend 26 anger management classes and to have no contact
with two of her children for the next three years, pending a pretrial
hearing scheduled for January 22.
An
inspection of Cardenas’s criminal record shows previous arrests for
public intoxication and restraining orders filed against her by her
husband, George Rosales stemming from apparent domestic discord.
In May 2015, Cardenas was sentenced to 44 hours of community service after being arrested for public intoxication. Updated Below
Cardenas’s
husband, George Rosales, filed for and received a restraining order
against the candidate in connection with her Thanksgiving Day
incident and arrest.
Beatrice
Cardenas is due back in Alhambra criminal court on January 22 for a
pretrial hearing to determine whether she is complying with court
ordered anger management class attendance and the terms of
restraining orders involving her minor children.
Cardenas
attempted a similar Congressional run in 2018, but failed to meet
even the minimal ballot requirements in California, where only 40
signatures of registered voters are required to make the ballot.
Cardenas was kept off the ballot after a handful of her signatures
were invalidated.
Cardenas
has styled herself as a Trump Republican, but her social media
reveals posts defending Democrat impeachment ringleader Adam Schiff,
praising Diane Feinstein and expressing admiration even for the woman
whose office she is seeking to fill, Democrat incumbent, Judy Chu.
Additionally,
sources indicate Cardenas was initially unsettled regarding political
party affiliation for her candidacy and confided in advisors that she
was leaning toward running as a Democrat in both 2018 and in 2020,
before finally deciding to run as a Republican.
UPDATE:
CORRECTION: After more in depth research the comment ” In May 2015, Cardenas was sentenced to 44 hours of community service after being arrested for public intoxication.” is not the same Beatrice Yvette Cardenas that has one count of Child Abuse, as well as a Restraining Order from her x-husband. There is a pretrial hearing February 27th, 2020 at the Alhambra Courthouse.
