Brazilian tribes and forest tappers unite against Bolsonaro

January 16, 2020

By Leonardo Benassatto

XINGU INDIGENOUS PARK, Brazil (Reuters) – Brazilian indigenous tribes and rubber tappers joined forces on Wednesday to oppose steps by Brazilian far-right President Jair Bolsonaro that they say are destroying the Amazon forest they depend on.

Some 450 members of 47 tribes met for a second day to discuss how to resist Bolsonaro’s moves to weaken public agencies that are meant to protect the environment and native land rights. Bolsonaro has said tribes have too much land and he wants to open up the reservations to commercial mining and agriculture to develop the Amazon and lift indigenous people from poverty.

Kayapó chief Raoni Metuktire, who called the meeting in his village on the Xingu river, called on Brazil’s Congress to block the president’s policies.

“We are here to defend our land and to tell him to stop talking badly about us,” said Raoni, who became a global reference for his environmental campaigning in the 1980s with musician Sting at his side. He said he would never accept mining on his ancestral lands.

Among those attending the meeting was Angela Mendes, daughter of rubber tapper, trade union leader and environmentalist Chico Mendes who was killed by a rancher in 1988 for his efforts to protect the rainforest.

“United we can resist. They have the power of the state, but we have the force of the waters, the flowers and ancestral land,” she said at a news conference.

The existence of non-indigenous extractivist communities that live off rubber tapping and selling the fruits of the forest is being endangered by deforestation, she warned.

Mendes struck an alliance with Sonia Guajajara, head on the APIB umbrella, Brazil’s largest organization of tribes.

“This is a very grave moment in our history. It looks like a war scenario,” Guajajara said, accusing Bolsonaro of serving the interests of Brazil’s powerful agribusiness and farming sectors that have advanced into the Amazon region.

The rise in violence against Brazil’s 850,000 indigenous people due to land conflicts with farmers and illegal mining and logging on reservations threaten the tribes’ future, she said.

Bolsonaro has vowed to integrate indigenous people into the Brazilian economy and society, an assimilation that Guajajara said was tantamount to the death of their cultures and languages.

Brazil’s indigenous affairs agency, Funai, run by a police officer appointed by Bolsonaro, said the meeting in the Xingu was a “totally private event” that it could not support because it was not “in line” with government policy.

Guatemalan leader says Mexico plans to contain new caravan

January 16, 2020

By Frank Jack Daniel and Gustavo Palencia

GUATEMALA CITY/TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) – Guatemala’s new president on Wednesday faced an early test of his ability to manage migration as a caravan of hundreds of people left Honduras for the United States, and said Mexico would halt its progress.

President Alejandro Giammattei inherited a contentious deal that his predecessor’s government struck with Washington designed to make migrants from Honduras and El Salvador seek asylum in Guatemala rather than the United States.

Giammattei met with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard early on Wednesday, and later told reporters that Mexico was determined to halt the caravan’s advance.

“The Mexican government told us that they won’t let it pass,” said Giammattei, “that they will do everything in their powers to stop it from passing.”

Mexico’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Giammattei’s remarks.

Earlier, Ebrard said on Twitter that Mexico and Guatemala will hold bilateral talks on migration once the new Guatemalan government has become familiar with “the situation.”

In accordance with a freedom of movement agreement between northern Central America countries, Giammattei said he would allow the caravan to enter Guatemala provided its members had the required paperwork.

Still, tensions flared when a group of about 300 migrants approached the Guatemala border at Corinto from Honduras.

According to Honduran security ministry spokesman Jair Meza, Honduran police fired tear gas when a group of people tried to cross without passing through migration controls.

Some reached the Guatemalan side, where 15 people were detained by Guatemalan authorities and sent back, Meza said.

Giammattei, a conservative who has already discussed migration with top U.S. officials, is scheduled to speak by phone with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Giammattei has yet to detail how he will treat the U.S. migration agreement, instead focusing on economic development.

“Physical walls aren’t going to stop migration… the only things that stop migration are walls of prosperity,” Giammattei told Mexican broadcaster Televisa.

Before dawn, the caravan of several hundred people set off from San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras, about 25 miles (40 km) from the Guatemala border.

“Here there’s no work, there’s nothing. That’s why we are fleeing to the United States,” a young man traveling with his wife and two children told Honduran television.

San Pedro Sula, one of Central America’s most violent cities, also was the departure point for a large caravan in 2018 that angered Trump, prompting him to press governments in the region to do more to contain migration.

Guatemala’s former President Jimmy Morales last July agreed with the U.S. government to implement measures aimed at reducing U.S. asylum claims from migrants fleeing Honduras and El Salvador, averting Trump’s threat of economic sanctions.

Giammattei said a top priority would be reviewing the text of migration agreements made with the United States.

Obama Appointee Blocks North Carolina From Requiring Voter ID

(Breitbart) – U.S. District Court Judge Loretta Biggs has delayed a decision on North Carolina voter ID legislation until next week.

Judge Biggs, an Obama appointee, has temporarily blocked measures that would require legal identification at the ballot box in 2020. Notification of the delay was appended to NAACP et al v. Cooper, one of two lawsuits challenging the new restrictions. The decision comes just before a statewide mailing which would explain them.

“The court gave advance notice that it will rule with plaintiffs and preliminarily enjoin the photo voter ID law next week,” Caitlin Swain, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said in an e-mail statement. “We are awaiting the full order, gratified that the court is intervening to prevent this discriminatory law from impeding North Carolinians equal access to the ballot.”

North Carolina’s State Board of Elections opposed the injunction when it was originally requested in September, but State Board spokesperson Patrick Gannon said Friday morning that it will be up to Attorney General Josh Stein to decide what action, if any, will be taken. Meanwhile, Stein spokesperson Laura Brewer indicated the Attorney General’s Office will not decide on its approach until the full order is released.

Speaker of the House Tim Moore called on the Board to fight “this last-minute attempt by an activist federal judge to overturn the will of North Carolina voters.” In a statement e-mailed to WRAL News, the Speaker said:

To issue an injunction against one of the nation’s most lenient voter ID laws — which 34 states already have — without providing an opinion is an outrageous affront to due process, the rights of North Carolina voters, and the rule of law.

Via text, WRAL reports that House Rules Chairman David Lewis said the General Assembly will also “explore additional options to ensure that the people’s vote for voter ID is respected.”

President Trump Tweets In Support Of Laura Loomer’s Candidacy

(Gateway Pundit) – On the same day that several accounts retweeted by President Trump were deleted or suspended by the tech-left censors at Twitter, President Donald J. Trump just RTd an account with a huge following that regularly encourages its followers to support investigative journalist turned congressional candidate Laura Loomer.

Loomer has been one of Trump’s most vocal and effective advocates, even after beng banned from literally every platform known to man, often referred to as THE MOST BANNED WOMAN IN THE WORLD. She has made waves as a first time candidate, out-raising her Democrat opponent and GOP primary opponents in the most recent fundraising quarter, as reported on by TGP. Our sources tell us that this upcoming quarter could be even bigger for Loomer.

President Trump’s willingness to RT something discussing the deadly effects of illegal immigration and open borders is not only brave, but much needed for the American public to see. Showcasing his support for Loomer is something that will undoubtedly bolster her campaign and stature in the America First. Unlike other candidates, Laura Loomer is not all talk.

In January, of 2019, Loomer made international headlines and trended on Twitter, which she is banned on, when she brought a trio of illegal aliens to Nancy Pelosi’s California mansion. She hopped over Pelosi’s wall with the illegals, pitched a sanctuary tent, and decorated the tent with pictures of Americans who had been murdered by illegal aliens.

Illegal Alien Allegedly Murdered Woman, Shot Her Son Days Before Christmas

(Breitbart) – An illegal alien has been arrested after allegedly murdering a woman in Cobb County, Georgia, and shooting her teenage son days before Christmas.

Juan Antonio Gonzalez, a 32-year-old illegal alien, allegedly led Cobb County officers on a car chase after he fled the home of 38-year-old Oralia Melo Meza and her 16-year-old son. According to police, Gonzalez shot and killed Meza before shooting her son in the arm, leaving him with a non-life threatening injury, on December 21.

Police said when they arrived at Meza’s home following a 911 call about a domestic dispute, Gonzalez pulled out of the driveway and fired at Cobb County officers. At one point, the illegal alien hit on the officers’ cars and led them on a car chase for about six miles.

Gonzalez was taken into custody only after he crashed his car into another vehicle on the road.

For now, Gonzalez has been hit with one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, one count of possession of a firearm, and one count of attempting to evade police. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has placed a detainer on Gonzalez so that should he be released, he will be deported.

New York Jailbreak: Illegal Alien Freed After Allegedly Killing Mother Of Three On Christmas Eve

A New York state law that allows accused criminals to be freed from prison the same day they are arrested for violent crimes has freed an illegal alien accused of killing a mother of three on Christmas Eve.

Jorge Flores-Villalba, a 27-year-old illegal alien, according to Assemblyman Colin Schmitt, was arrested after he allegedly admitted to hitting and killing mother of three Marie “Rosie” Osai, who was a legal immigrant from Haiti, in a Christmas Eve crash on Long Island, New York.

“I was driving and I did strike a person,” Flores-Villalba allegedly told law enforcement officials. “I didn’t call the police. I was afraid because I don’t have a license.”

After being charged with felony fleeing the scene of a deadly accident, Flores-Villalba was arraigned and then freed without bail on Christmas day — less than 24 hours after Osai was allegedly killed.

Family friend Irene Secone told New York CBS Local that Osai’s friends and relatives are “devastated” while “this man on Christmas day goes home and spends it with his family.”

The illegal alien’s immediate release is now required by law in New York after state Democrats, against the wishes of law enforcement and even the most liberal district attorneys, rammed through a series of bail reform measures and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed the legislation into law.

The law will ensure that suspects accused of crimes deemed “non-violent” are not jailed before their trial dates and do not have to post bail. Instead, these suspects are released directly back into the public and expected to show up for their court dates. About 125,000 accused criminals are expected to be released from prison every year in the state.

The list of crimes for which suspects will be freed from prison before trial includes:

  • Second-degree manslaughter
  • Aggravated vehicular assault
  • Third-degree assault
  • Promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child
  • Possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child
  • Promoting a sexual performance by a child
  • Failure to register as a sex offender
  • Making terroristic threats
  • Criminally negligent homicide
  • Aggravated vehicular homicide

As part of the law, accused criminals will actually be allowed to investigate their own crime scenes and be given a list of named witnesses testifying against them within 15 days of their arrangement. The law means that if a suspect is charged with home burglary, that suspect will be allowed to return to the victim’s home and inspect their property as part of their defense.

House Passes Farm Amnesty Bill

US HOUSE JUST NOW PASSED BIG AMNESTY
Author Photo

260 Representatives agreed that ag wages are too high and voted for a bill to keep wages from rising.

What did your activism accomplish?

DEAR FRIENDS,

I’m sorry to report that the U.S. House of Representatives a few minutes ago passed the H.R. 5038 ag amnesty and indentured servitude act by a vote of 260 to 165.

(As noted below, although the grassroots opposition was not enough to defeat this bill in the House, there are reasons to believe it may have been enough to block this in the Senate.)

While some supporters of the bill called Americans lazy and said ag wages are too high, I am proud of NumbersUSA activists across the country who stood with us on the side of American workers.

VOTING YES ON THE AMNESTY

Amazingly, 226 Democrats took the side of law-breaking agri-business employers and their illegal workers against the legal workers in the ag industry.

Joining them in supporting the amnesty for employers who have massively broken immigration laws for years were 34 Republicans voting YES.

Everybody’s votes will show up on their NumbersUSA Report Cards tomorrow, and their grades will reflect where they stood this evening.

VOTING NO ON THE AMNESTY

Voting NO to the amnesty were 161 Republicans , three Democrats and one Independent.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR THOUSANDS OF PHONE CALLS IN OPPOSITION

Yes, we lost this vote. But we have gone into every fight in the 23 years of our existence with the idea that there are always ways to win while losing. That is, we often can set up better results in the future even while losing an immediate battle.

The view from Capitol Hill earlier this week was that the House was ready to pass this amnesty in a landslide that showed such bi-partisan consensus that the majority Republicans in the Senate would have to move the amnesty on to the President.

Thanks to the grassroots opposition that poured into congressional offices over the phone lines, that consensus did not occur.

The phone blitz certainly blunted the momentum for the bi-partisan consensus and helped the majority of House Republicans to stand against the tide of cheap-labor ag industry lobbying.

We hope that the fact that more than 80% of the Republicans in the House voted against the bill will signal to the Republican majority in the Senate that they should stop this travesty of a bill.

ESPECIALLY INTERESTING VOTES

Those of you phoning the offices of the following Representatives should feel especially pleased about the way they responded on the floor of the House.

Three Democrats broke ranks and voted NO, siding with the legal workers — and with ag employers who have chosen to obey the law.

Rep. Golden (Maine)

Rep. McAdams (Utah)

Rep. Scott (VA)

In addition, Rep. Tlaib (Minn.) voted “present” rather than support the amnesty.

Especially gratifying were three Republicans who were among the 24 cosponsors of the bill who, upon being informed more about the contents of the bill and of the wishes of their constituents voted NO tonight:

Rep. Curtis (Utah)

Rep. Gibbs (Ohio)

Rep. Stewart (Utah)

Also, even though the libertarian CATO Institute endorsed the amnesty, Rep. Amash (a Michigan Libertarian) voted NO.

In addition, every office of a Representative voting YES has been made aware this week of just how horrible a vote for this bill sounds to many constituents. We will soon be giving you a chance to drive that point further home in the hope of influencing future actions.
