Guatemalan Prosecutor's Office raids offices of Save The Children

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — The Guatemalan prosecutor's office raided the offices of the non-governmental organization Save The Children on Thursday for an alleged complaint about the violation of the rights of migrant children.
Prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche said through a video released to the media that the complaint filed by an unidentified person is transnational and of great importance because it involves the rights of children. The raid seeks documents that support the accusations.
Last week, the prosecution requested, in a letter sent to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, collaboration to address the complaint.
In his letter to Paxton, signed by the Secretary General of the Public Ministry, Ángel Pineda, the organizations that “could be participating in child trafficking operations” would be Save The Childre, Changing The Way We Care, World Fund for Children, Arise and The Union of the Entire People. Prosecutors did not confirm whether Paxton responded to the request.
Curruchiche and Pineda have been accused of trying to undermine the country's democracy, as well as hindering the anti-corruption fight, which has led to more than 40 countries sanctioning them and prohibiting them from entering their territories, including the United States and the European Union.
The organization dedicated to the care of children, which has been working in Guatemala since 1976, issued a statement last week indicating that it was aware of the allegations, but that it had no indications related to that issue.
“We take with great responsibility the arguments related to the safeguarding of children and misconduct and we have independent investigation mechanisms to investigate thoroughly,” Save The Children responded in its statement on Tuesday. “We have no evidence to validate these allegations and we continue to work hard to provide humanitarian aid to migrant children and adolescents and their families under strict protection and safeguarding standards.”
The organization has not yet commented on Thursday's raid.
