Four illegals from Chile have been indicted for breaking into the home of National Football League (NFL) quarterback Joe Burrow. Authorities allege the suspects may be behind a string of similar robberies targeting wealthy homeowners.
The robbery took place on December 9 at Burrow’s home in Anderson Township, Ohio. The illegals stole memorabilia belonging to the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback while he was in Texas for a game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Ohio State Highway Troopers caught the four during a traffic stop, where police found Burrow’s memorabilia in their vehicle. Three of the illegals gave police fake IDs, while one, Alexander Esteban Huaiquil-Chavez, handed over a legitimate New York state ID.
Police say the robbery is part of a significant trend involving criminal groups from Central and South America who target the homes of wealthy people and professional athletes. Authorities note that the gangs are able to exploit a State Department travel program to get into the United States for up to 90 days to carry out their crimes. The U.S. Visa Waiver Program allows Chileans on business or tourism to enter the United States without thorough vetting.
Criminal gangs use sophisticated equipment to carry out their operations, including cell phone jammers.
Despite being obligated to conduct criminal background checks as part of the Visa Waiver Program, Chilean officials say such checks are not being performed properly. This allows long-time criminals to come to the U.S. and be considered first-time offenders if arrested.
